Guide for Water Safety Planning for Rural Drinking Water Supply in Uttar Pradesh

Objectives:

The purpose of this assignment is to develop a process guide to guide Implementation Support Agencies (as well as Block and District Functionaries) in implementing Water Safety Planning in their project locations. It is intended that the document offers practical guidance for taking a water safety planning approach to water supply systems, such as those operated by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) / Jal Nigam of Uttar Pradesh, and to all development and implementation stages of the water delivery service schemes— from design to construction and operation and management. The use of these guidelines should assist the Implementation Support Agencies as well as PHED/UP Jal Nigam in strengthening its current operations and future investments in water safety planning. More specifically, the purpose of this guide is to

  • • provide practical guidance to the PHED/ UP Jal Nigam management and staff, as well as other state institutions and DWSM, in managing health risks in water supply systems.
  • • sensitize concerned stakeholders in the state to the importance of water safety planning and build their capacity to ensure the safety of drinking water by means of this approach.
  • • help GP/VWSC in assessing and managing WQ related risks in a holistic manner thereby enhancing efficiency of water supply schemes in providing safe water and to safeguard human health
