Sohini TarafdarFor a past few decades numerous steps are being taken by the Government to provide safe water and sanitation in order to save the society from harsh effects of diseases caused from contaminated water and unhygienic sanitation. Till date 1.1 million people of rural India are deprived of safe drinking water and 2.5 billion population lack the privilege of sanitation. For a past few years several committees have been formed in the rural sector to perform water quality monitoring to cater to the prevailing acute water quality problem in India. “Water Users Committee” has been formed whose role is to provide safe drinking water supply in individual household and most importantly help the village with water supply during water crisis faced in unforeseen natural calamities. Several “Water Users Committees” has been formed in many villages of Patharpratima and Sagar blocks of South 24 parganas district in West Bengal. The module was created by SIGMA FOUNDATION in collaboration with the initiative of volunteers of Digambarpur-Angikar with the support of Water for People’s “Everyone Forever Program 2017”. A specific Training Module is required for the proper functioning of the above mentioned “Water Users Committee”. The objective of the program is to provide a half day training program to the members of Water Users Committee so that they can efficiently ensure proper drinking water supply and proper maintenance of water source. 7- 15 core members of Water User Committee were the participants of the Training program.
