Studies on WASH in Khoyrasol and Rajnagar Blocks of Birbhum District (West Bengal)
Water For People India Trust, in partnership with SIGMA Foundation, conducted a baseline survey for assessing current status of accessibility of water in households, schools and Anganwadi centers of Khoyrasol and Rajnagar blocks and to find out the gaps in service delivery for strengthening the same towards providing water services for everyone on a sustainable basis through appropriate interventions. The status of sanitation and hygiene and access to water for sanitary purpose was also covered.
Seven different structured/ semi-structured questionnaires/ discussion points for IDIs were prepared for covering the Households, Schools, AWCs, Service Providers, Community water point and carrying out ‘Asset analysis’ for (i) piped water source and (ii) hand pumps being used by the community in both Rajnagar and Khoyrasol blocks. In total, 900 HHs out of 16,156 HHs of Rajnagar block and 1,823 HHs out of total 27,689 HHs of Khoyrasol block were selected for survey following the process of random sampling. The sample size had been worked out to provide 95% confidence interval and 5% margin of error. The Asset Analysis was conducted in 2,109 water points to assess three different risk areas of a particular water supply system such as the age of the water supply system, overall functionality/level of service provided by the water supply system etc. One functional drinking water source in every revenue village used by the community was identified at random for assessment of its functioning as a community water point. A total 161 community water points were surveyed using structured questionnaire. The WASH status of 109 primary schools and 37 high schools (Junior High, High and Higher Secondary Schools) of Khoyrasol block and 78 primary schools and 17 high schools of Rajnagar block and 183 AWCs in Khoyrasol block and 109 AWCs in Rajnagar block were surveyed.
The study has been completed as scheduled and the report has been submitted to WFPI.
