SIGMA Foundation has completed an integrated assessment of roads, drinking-water supply, drainage and waterlogging, and electricity supply and street lighting across New Town (NKDA), 11 wards of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), and five Gram Panchayats of Rajarhat Block under AC-115.
The assessment highlights the impact of rapid urbanisation and population growth on civic infrastructure and the services delivered to the citizen. In the area under the AC 115, the built-up areas increased by approximately 119% between 2005 and 2025. Drainage and waterlogging emerge as key concerns, particularly in the BMC wards and rural areas, where inadequate drainage contributes to road damage, waterlogging and disruption of mobility. The study also identifies the need to improve road conditions, ensure reliable household-level piped water supply and strengthen street-lighting.
The report recommends a coordinated, area-specific approach to infrastructure development, prioritising integrated drainage planning, road rehabilitation, functional water-supply systems, bridging the gaps in street lighting and sustainable maintenance. These measures can help address existing service gaps while supporting the continuing urban growth through more resilient and sustainable infrastructure planning.
